Awake in the Night
Alarm goes off - coffee maker beep The Night need not be taken asleep With shadows upon, the lamp - turn on Go to your desk to await the Dawn Write a poem about the passing of time And don't forget to make unoriginal rhymes Talk about talking and walk with your friends The streetlights alight your night 'til it ends Light a candle that smells like vanilla Even though I don't like that smell. Turn on the oven two hours past midnight Wash the bowl and the spoon while the bread becomes right Sleep for a moment, it's okay to rest Close your eyes and imagine the best Way the Day in hours could go, don't wait for the crow Of the rooster, the coffee, alarm, and bough Of the tree that sees the things that you need And you climbed when the worst thing was the bleed Of a cut on your knee or a scrape on your elbow Things without interest or a need to know And now in the Dawn, did that tree ever leave? It's here and will be here, long after caffeine Even as the last leaf 'comes soil The first leaf on the way, far longer than Day
